Guðleifr ørrabein

Jayson wanted a good Viking name, and after browsing through the Landnamabok he found Guðleifr.  The nickname ørrabein  means scar-leg, also in the Landnamabok.  I’d pronounce the resulting name /GOOD-lay-fer OO-ra-bayn/, except the d is actually the “th” in “this” and “that”, and I’m guessing about the ø.

At first, he just wanted a device to put on his shield for a Lightwood event, The Holy City.  His idea was a patriarchal cross and a zig-zag division — it was cute, but he only intended to use it temporarily.  What he really wanted was something with rats in it! I whipped up a design for him, Gules, on a cross argent five rats rampant sable, but it really didn’t work, so we examined other options. His first idea for a really serious device had a rampant yellow rat, and for a while I thought it was clear.  However, asking for help on the Lochac Heraldry Chat Facebook group revealed a conflict that I’d missed.  Jayson was sad until he realised he actually preferred the rat walking, and pointed in the opposite direction.  We came up with Per bend vert and gules, a rat statant to sinister Or, which we submitted in July 2014, and it was registered in October of that year.
