Lightwood goes to the Kempton Festival

Our friends from Loxley Archers signed up to provide some Come & Try archery for The Kempton Festival on Sunday the 17th of February, so naturally the Canton had to go along and help out.  It may be a couple of hours away, but compared to Thomas and Guinevere’s drive from Burnie it’s practically next door. In attendance from the Canton were William, Morwenna, Mariot, Ranmor and Talia from Housse de Bonnay, and Karl and Gocken (pictured) from Old Briar Farm. The Festival was moderately well attended, or very well attended if you count the sheep as well as the …

Come along and bring a dish to share. Wear your warm garb and bring feasting gear. Any problems with any of that? Contact the Steward. The feast is $5 per person, plus the $5 insurance levy if you’re not a member. Event flyer available here (PDF). 24th November – Lightwood’s 7th Birthday. Stewarded by Lord Ranmor Argul, this will feature an archery competition (what else for the archery canton?). More details to come.

The Feast of St Genesius – 25th August

The Canton will be holding a potluck feast at the Geeveston Community Hall, Brady St, from 6pm on Saturday August 25th. Saint Genesius is the patron saint of actors, clowns, comedians, comics… and lawyers! Who better to inspire a pot-luck feast in Lightwood? Come along, bring garb and feasting gear plus a dish to share. While you’re at it, why not come up with a suitably medieval joke or riddle in honour of the day: a prize may or may not be given for a particularly impressive example. A paltry $5 will get you in the door (plus the compulsory …

Saturnalia II

The Canton held our second Roman-style midwinter celebration on June 9th at Glen Huon Hall. Steward, once again, was THL Karl Faustus von Aachen, with head cook this year being Óláfr Hafrillugi, in his first (but hopefully not last!) feast for the group. Head Cook Óláfr Hafrillugi, photo by THL Karl Faustus von Aachen During the day, there was a bounteous spread of afternoon tea provided by Óláfr, to sustain the early attendees in various activities such as dancing (led by Baroness Jehanne de Finistère), boffer fighting, (hobby)horse racing and kubb. In the evening, the feast-goers played dice and other …

Regular A&S project nights are restarting on Friday this week – 7-9:30pm at Geeveston Community Centre (GeCo), School Road, Geeveston. The current plan is to hold them on the second and fourth Fridays of the month, but depending on interest we could go back to weekly in future. We may have a group project or two in the works soon, but otherwise come along and work on personal projects. Lady Morwenna learning how to do facings at a basic garb-making workshop As per previous arrangements, the cost is a $2 donation which goes towards venue hire, plus the compulsory $5 …

Io Saturnalia!

The Romans used to say IO SATURNALIA, which means something like “Merry Christmas” or “Happy Holidays” but with less shopping frenzy and more togas*.  So: io Saturnalia to you! Saturnalia will be held on Saturday 9 June at Glen Huon Hall, Glen Huon — see the map over there to the right. It will start at 2pm with a pot-luck afternoon tea and many imperial entertainments.  There will be games, for people who want to sit and relax! Dancing, taught by Baroness Jehanne, for people who want to get a bit of energy out! Songs and stories, performed by the …

4th St Sebastian’s Archery Tourney

The Canton of Lightwood held our fourth annual St Sebastian’s archery tourney and picnic on Saturday 3rd March 2018. It was a delightful day, with a challenging archery course, a great deal of food, and enjoyable company. We had 35 archers take the field, in two individual rounds followed by a couples’ shoot. We enjoyed the company of some members of the Loxley Traditional Archers, who travelled down from the north of the Barony to join us for this event. While several are old friends, it was a pleasure to meet others who were new to attending southern events, and …
