Over the weekend 29 September- 2 October, the Barony of Ynys Fawr will be hosting the 9th annual Great Southern Gathering (GSG), a weekend teaching event which rotates yearly between Ynys Fawr and the Baronies of Krae Glas (south-east Melbourne) and Innilgard (Adelaide). This year it will be held at Orana Girl Guides Camp, Roches Beach. Members of the Canton will be in attendance, both teaching and attending classes.
GSG was conceived as a relaxed weekend of teaching and sharing knowledge across many fields and spheres of interest – this year’s line up of Arts and Sciences (A&S) classes includes topics as diverse as singing early music, 16th century men’s shirts, leather working, understanding historical pottery, panel painting, and creatively anachronistic op shopping. This year, there will be also a Viking living history encampment, with Canton members Nick and Tina demonstrating campfire cooking and other period crafts during the day. There will be a strong focus on rapier (fencing), with several visiting teachers of high renown offering classes both practical and theoretical. A feast will be held on Saturday night, followed by a bardic circle around the campfire where performers gather to share songs, entertainments and laughter. Classes continue on Sunday morning, followed by tournaments for children’s boffer combat, armoured combat, archery and rapier.
