A&S demo at Judbury Crafters Group

The Barony of Ynys Fawr was invited to give a demonstration of the A&S side of SCA life by the Judbury Crafters’ Group. Organised by the Canton’s A&S officer Adelindis filia Gotefridi on behalf of the Barony, the Judbury group’s August meeting welcomed a display and presentation given by Adelindis, Anna Felice Tavestoche and Morwenna de Bonnay. We were too busy talking all things SCA to take any photographs of the wonderful display of A&S contributed by various members of the Barony for the occasion, but a gallery can be found on the Judbury Crafters’ Group blog. We all had …

Inkle Weaving Workshops

In July, the Canton ran two workshops on inkle weaving. William de Bonnay made 12 looms, which were available as part of the workshop price. We had a great deal of interest for the workshops, and across the two days we learned to warp them correctly (a very time-consuming process), and then began learning the basics of pattern-weaving. While there were a number of people absent from the second workshop due to illness and injury, our ever-patient instructor Nick managed to instil the beginnings of understanding into the heads of those of us who were present, and has offered to …

The Holy City War and Feast

In February, the Canton put on a show with the Holy City War and Feast. Originally conceived of as a change from the more generic “medieval” events which Lightwood has held in the past, the Holy City was envisaged as a representation of 1000 years of Jerusalem’s history, from 600-1600. The event was originally planned for later in February, but when the King and Queen of Lochac requested that an event be run for Their visit on the weekend of 7-8 February, Lightwood put in a bid and the Canton was chosen to host the Royal visit to Ynys Fawr …

That Was The Feast That Was

Lightwood had its November pot luck feast last night, and it was a lot of fun. We were missing a fair few canton members, after a nasty run of bad news and unexpected medical procedures during the week, but our numbers were supplemented somewhat by the College of St Gildas the Wise. This was a deliberate attempt at what you might call a “lightning feast”: small scale, short notice, nothing too ambitious, just to prove that we don’t need to kill ourselves to have events. As you can see from the photo, it still looked good. It was also a …

The Canton Banner

At the Imot today, Adelindis and Morwenna started on the process of couching the edges of the laurel wreath. The banner as presented at Court was largely machine appliqued because of the short timeframe, but the intention is to gradually replace the machine stitching with corded edging, while still having a fully-functional banner to use at events in the meantime. The exception to this were the apples, which were couched onto the tree before the tree was sewn onto the banner. Couching, or corded applique, is a common period embroidery technique especially suited to heraldic applications such as banners. A …
