Canton Days

Alas, the glorious run of luck we’d been having with winter events deserted us this weekend, and the archery component was cancelled for this month’s Canton Day. Instead, we met up for a potluck lunch. After this month’s date was put back to avoid clashes, Canton Day for September will return to being the first Saturday of the month, so feel free to come and join us on September 2nd for a few hours of archery and fun.

Great Southern Gathering

Over the weekend 29 September- 2 October,  the Barony of Ynys Fawr will be hosting the 9th annual Great Southern Gathering (GSG), a weekend teaching event which rotates yearly between Ynys Fawr and the Baronies of Krae Glas (south-east Melbourne) and Innilgard (Adelaide). This year it will be held at Orana Girl Guides Camp, Roches Beach. Members of the Canton will be in attendance, both teaching and attending classes. GSG was conceived as a relaxed weekend of teaching and sharing knowledge across many fields and spheres of interest – this year’s line up of Arts and Sciences (A&S) classes includes …

August Canton Day

Our next Canton Day will be held on August 19th, from 11am-3pm. Canton Days are a relaxed and fun way of getting involved in the Canton – come along and try archery and enjoy a potluck lunch. Canton Days are garbed events but we have loaner garb available if needed. Just talk to our Hospitaller to arrange something. Canton Day will be held at a private address, so please contact our Hospitaller, Lady Morwenna de Bonnay, for details, by email or calling (03) 6297 1083. If you’re closer to Hobart, the Barony of Ynys Fawr is holding a similar casual …

Canton Project Night – Boffer Making

After the success of the children’s boffer-fighting component at Saturnalia, the Canton decided that we needed to make boffers for the group rather than relying on private or Baronial loans. Friday 21 July was picked as the night to work on this project. Many hands make light work, and with the use of the workshop at our wonderful venue, the Geeveston Community Centre (GeCo), we had seven new boffer swords and daggers made in no time. Canton Day

Lightwood was blessed with a beautiful winter’s day for the resumption of Canton Day on Saturday 8 July. We had 12 people in attendance, including several who had travelled down from the greater Barony, and several rounds of archery were enjoyed, interspersed with a pot luck lunch. The ingenious backstop for catching arrows and preventing them from travelling into the neighbour’s paddock worked very effectively. Thanks to Lady Mariot and Lord Ranmor for their hospitality, and the effort they put into preparing the archery range. We hope to be back again soon!

Canton Day – July

After a break of a few months, Canton Day resumes in July with a garbed pot luck lunch and archery (weather permitting). The date is Saturday July 8th from 11am -3pm. It will be held at a private address – with a nice warm fire to retreat to after the archery – so please contact our Hospitaller, Lady Morwenna de Bonnay, for the address, on newcomers@lightwood.lochac.sca.org or (03) 6297 1083.

Saturnalia

The Canton held its midwinter event, based on the Roman Festival of Saturnalia and stewarded by THL Karl Faustus von Aachen, at Kraken Hall on June 24th. We were pleased to have the company of Baron Gilbert Purchase and Baroness Bethony Gaitskell of Krae Glas and their family for the occasion. The Gladiatorial Games during the day were greatly entertaining (if chilly). The populace were able to buy a gladiator for the games at the initial auction, held after opening Court, and the first round of the tourney was conducted by owner’s challenge. There was much amusement provided by the …

St Sebastian’s Archery Picnic III

The Canton celebrated our third St Sebastian’s Archery Picnic on February 18th. It was a fun, low-key event, in which the usual high calibre of archery in the Barony was on display. The fiendish mind of the Canton’s Captain of Archers had been hard at work to produce new targets to dismay and confound all comers, as is now traditional. The place-getters of the archery competition were Lord Anselm da Calabria (first on 146), Thomas Loxley (140) and Lord William de Bonnay (139). Winner of the pairs shoot were Thomas Loxley and Baroness Anna Felice Tavestoche (122). Congratulations to them …
