Lightwood’s Eighth Birthday – 30 November
Lightwood will be celebrating its birthday a little late this year.
So You Want To Join The SCA…
The SCA is a world-wide organisation with a slightly strange membership tradition. If you want to come along to Lightwood activities, here’s what you need to know.
Look Ma! We’re On The Tube!
Matt Anderson of GeCo came along to St Sebastians and produced this video as part of a project to highlight activities in the Huon Valley promoting health and social interaction. Feel free to share it around.
Winter Warmer Warmed Wonderfully
After rather a complicated couple of weeks during which everybody was distracted by various medical and other emergencies, it was lovely to come together for a traditional Lightwoodian pot luck feast. Fifteen people attended, which is pretty good for this time of year, and we got to try out some new ideas. Lord William has built a new game, known in the mundane world as Cornhole (we really have to come up with a less disturbing name!), which has origins in mid-period Germany. It will rival our beloved Kubb in popularity and enhance the training that will make Lightwood’s archers …
LAVITSEF – Totally Informal, Still Awesome
For the second time in mumble mumble years, Lightwood has responded to that silly mainland Rowany Festival with a festive occasion of our own: the Lightwood Alternative Very Informal Totally Simplified Easter Festivity, or LAVITSEF. About a dozen Lightwoodians and Ynys Fawrians came down to our new home base at Castle Forbes Bay and had fun. Over three days of Easter there was singing, archery, the Viking game called Kubb, a very silly movie, an easter egg hunt, a sudden unexpected Arts & Sciences collegium, and lots of food! It was all good fun and we’re planning to do it …
Canton Day Was Amazing!
Lightwood has found a new home base at the Castle Forbes Bay Recreation Ground at the end of Meredith Street, so this past Saturday we had our first garbed Canton Day there and then joined in the CFB Recreation Club’s Open Day. Both were well attended: even with the long drive down for St Sebs fresh in their memory, we got a few visitors from Hobart, and as well we had a huge amount of interest from the locals in CFB who thought a medieval group in their back yard was quite a delight. The Rec Ground is a bit …
LAVITSEF 2019 – Good Friday to Easter Sunday
Because not everyone can attend Rowany Festival on the mainland over Easter, we’re running our own camping event over the Friday, Saturday and Sunday of Easter 2019, under the name of the Lightwood Alternative Very Informal Totally Simplified Easter Festivity, or LAVITSEF. The venue is Castle Forbes Bay Recreation Ground, on Meredith Street, about 20 minutes south of Huonville. It’s a large oval with plenty of room for archery, tournaments and camping, and with clubrooms with a bar and kitchen and a wood fire. It will be cosy and quite luxurious! Arrive on Good Friday evening to set up your …
Canton Day – 6 April
The Canton is trying out our new home ground at the Castle Forbes Bay Recreation Ground on our next Canton Day, Saturday 6 April. It’s the CFB Recreation Club’s open day, so we want to see fighters, fencers and archers from the Barony there, to help us show off to the locals. Archery starts at 2pm and the open day is running from 4pm, so if you’re a fighter or a fencer then we’d love you to come along, in time to armour up around 4.30pm. We should all be done by 6-6.30pm. Further details on the Facebook event. Remember …
St Sebastians V
Now that was a fun event! The weather was dry and the promised rain stayed away, though unusually for Lightwood this didn’t mean either blistering heat or gale force winds. It was just a nice day, a bit cool but not in any way unpleasant. We had around forty people attending, and a large and respectable field of competitors in the tournament and the Arts & Sciences competition. As is traditional, the trophy for the archery was taken away by Thomas Loxley of Loxley Archers up in Burnie, and to rub it in he and his good lady Guinevere Winter …
